Why did you choose to work in criminal/ family law?

I chose to work in criminal law because it offers a unique opportunity to advocate for justice, uphold the rule of law, and protect the rights of individuals within our legal system. It involves complex and challenging cases that require rigorous analysis and advocacy, which I find intellectually stimulating and fulfilling. Additionally, it allows me to make a meaningful difference in people's lives by ensuring a fair and just legal process.

Before embarking on my career as a barrister, I garnered invaluable experience as a lawyer within various government agencies. My pursuit was marked by a diverse exploration of multiple legal domains, driven by a genuine quest to uncover my passion within the field of law.

What advice would you give to a student who is interested in pursuing a career as a barrister once they graduate?

To a student aspiring to become a barrister after graduation, I would offer the following advice:

Gain Practical Experience: Seek internships, clerkships, or paralegal positions to gain practical experience in legal settings. This hands-on exposure will give you a better understanding of the profession and the areas that you are interested in. Networking: Build and nurture professional relationships within the legal community. Attend legal events, seminars, and conferences to meet practicing barristers and solicitors. A lot of your work as a barrister will come from your networks, so mingle and enjoy! Seek Guidance: Don't hesitate to seek advice from experienced barristers or mentors in the field. Their insights and guidance can be invaluable and can really assist you to determine whether a career at the Bar is for you.
